Spelman Alumna Leads Delta Air Line’s Innovation Team

Nicole-Jones-3Nicole Jones, C’95, recently was featured on the online tech news website Hypepotamus as an aviation professional who keeps one of the world’s largest airlines at the forefront of air travel innovation.

Jones leads The Hangar, Delta Air Line’s Global Innovation Center at Tech Square in Atlanta. She and her team are responsible for testing ideas to improve the travel experience for the Atlanta-based airline’s passengers, while adding efficiency across operations.

The Value of a Spelman Computer Science Degree

Jones was raised in Atlanta majored in computer science at Spelman. Upon graduation, she obtained an MBA from Emory University and built a very successful career in marketing at Turner Broadcasting and Delta before assuming her new role at the Hangar where she leads a 20-person team committed to keeping the airline efficient and customer-centric.

In the article Jones said, "This role is the perfect mash up of my technology, marketing and strategy background. Delta was looking for someone who was business-minded, entrepreneurial and passionate about the role that technology would play in Delta’s future."

“The ability to see innovation come to life across a global footprint gets me excited every day,” she told Hypepotamus.

According to the article, some of the innovative projects in the final stages of development at the Hangar include a meal bot that would allow customers traveling on international flights in the Delta One cabin to select their meal before their flight, and a mobile application that would allow lobby and gate agents to perform flight-related tasks without being tethered to a computer behind the counter.
