New Student Orientation Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect at NSO?

New Student Orientation (NSO) facilitates the smooth transition of new students into the Spelman College community by introducing all students to Spelman’s educational mission, history, academic advisement, course registration, and other unique opportunities. NSO also provides an overview of social and recreational activities that develop sisterhood, supportive networks, and school pride. After completing NSO, students should understand their responsibilities as members of the Spelman academic and social communities.

What are the NSO dates?

Fall 2017 Orientation dates are August 9 - 15, 2017 (Attendance is Mandatory)

Where can I find student information?

New students can find Orientation information and updates throughout Orientation on their mySpelman portal. To access the portal, click the mySpelman link located here and beneath the search tab throughout this website. Next, click "New Student" beneath the login button. This takes you to the New Student Checklist. When prompted, enter your 900# which you were assigned by the Admissions Office. Your username and password for logging into the mySpelman portal are on the checklist.

Where can I find parent and family information?

Parent and Family New Student Orientation information can be found on the mySpelman portal under the Parent Information link. Additional information can be found in our Parent's Guide and family orientation schedule. There is a link to mySpelman at the top of all pages in this website.

What is the checklist?

The checklist provides you a list of important information that must be completed by the specified dates.

What time should I arrive for NSO?

Fall orientation students will receive individual arrival times in early August via your Spelman email account. The arrival times will be between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Arrival times will be posted on the student’s checklist.

How do I access the NSO schedule?

PLEASE NOTE: The student schedule is a draft schedule and is subject to change. The Parent and Family Schedule will be available soon.

Additionally, the NSO schedule for students can be found on the mySpelman portal. Students will need to sign into their mySpelman portal.

When will I register for classes?

You will register during your advising session with your assigned academic adviser who is knowledgeable of the required courses. Your academic adviser will have access to your placement scores and any college credits you may have and will help you identify courses you should take. You will register for classes identified by you and your adviser during or after your advising session.

What is the math placement exam?

The math placement exam is required of all first-year and transfer students who are not transferring math credits. Exceptions include Summer Science students (WISTEM) with college math credit; Spelman’s Early College Program students with college math credit; students who score 4 or higher on the AP Calculus Examination; students who score 5, 6, or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Higher Level Examinations; and students earning a score of 50 on the math CLEP exam. 

Designated times and locations for the placement test will be posted on the mySpelman portal by August 9.

What is the computer literacy exam?

A computer literacy examination is given each semester to determine student exemption from CIS 100. The examination consists of both written and hands-on components. The examination may be taken only once. Students seeking exemption must take the examination no later than the end of their second year at Spelman. Exemption from the course does not carry credit hours. The exemption examination for CIS 100 will be given during NSO and early registration for the spring semester.

What is the language placement examination?

All students with one or more years of foreign language study are required to take an online or onsite language placement examination in the language she has previously studied. A student who wishes to start a new language at Spelman should still take the placement exam in the language she has studied previously. 

Students may complete the placement test for Spanish, French, German and Chinese online. The link for these language placement exams can be found on the New Student Checklist. Students who wish to take their placement test in Japanese, Latin or Portuguese must take the placement exam onsite during Orientation. Check the New Student Orientation Schedule for the location and time of these exams. 

Students who receive an exceptional score online or onsite are required to take an onsite oral examination. Students will receive email notification if an oral examination is required. The time and location of the oral exam will be provided in the email notification.

Where do I find the cost for tuition and fees?

The Office of Student Accounts provides information on the cost of tuition and payment plans.

What do I need to know about student housing and residential life?

Residence halls offer an opportunity for students to meet students from diverse backgrounds and cultures and develop a sense of community. Professional and residential staff work closely with residents to provide innovative, creative, social and cultural programs.

Where do guests stay during New Student Orientation?

Spelman College has reserved rooms at a special rate for New Student Orientation at preferred hotels. Room availability is limited, and space is not guaranteed; so make your reservations early.
