CARNEGIE FOUNDATION ELECTS FOUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Washington, D.C. (Nov. 1, 2008) The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching elected Larry Berger, David K. Cohen, Paul Romer and Beverly Daniel Tatum to its Board of Trustees for four-year terms. They will take office at the Foundation’s annual Board meeting in Washington, D.C., on November 20, 2008.

VICTORIA ROWELL SIGNS HER MEMOIR ‘THE WOMEN WHO RAISED ME’ AT SPELMAN COLLEGE MUSEUM OF FINE ART
After spending the first 18 years of her life in the foster care system, Victoria Rowell, activist, philanthropist, author and award-winning actor of stage and screen, could have ended up on the street, homeless, in a mental institution or in prison like many of the estimated 12 million children who have “graduated” from the foster care system in the United States. But, Rowell was blessed to be mothered, mentored and motivated by six remarkable women who saw a diamond in the rough in her and began to buff, refine, polish and nurture the little girl who would become the brilliant success she is today.

The fundraiser will provide financial support to Spelman students from Midwestern states whose loans have been adversely affected by the nation’s credit crisis.

SPELMAN COLLEGE PREMIERES ‘PASSING THE TORCH TO AMERICA’S YOUTH’
ATLANTA (Oct. 8, 2008) The Spelman College student chapter of American Women in Radio and Television will premiere the Gateway docudrama “Passing the Torch to America’s Youth,” a film that explores the historic 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights march and “Bloody Sunday” on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, when more than 600 demonstrators were brutalized by state and local police.

SPELMAN COMMUNITY DETERMINED TO ‘BEAT THE BUG’ THIS COLD AND FLU SEASON
ATLANTA (Oct. 7, 2008) During the 2007-2008 academic year, approximately 15 percent of Spelman’s student population was treated for cold and flu symptoms. Spelman’s Student Health Associates and Peer Educators are working to lower that number by educating the campus community on ways to stay healthy this cold and flu season.

WOMEN'S CENTER AT SPELMAN COLLEGE RECEIVES $1 MILLION GRANT FROM FORD FOUNDATION TO ESTABLISH ENDOWMENT FUND
ATLANTA (Sept. 25, 2008) To assist the Spelman College Women’s Research and Resource Center in its work to educate Black women and address issues of race and gender, the Ford Foundation contributed a $1 million grant to establish the Center’s endowment fund. The Ford Foundation, a New York-based international philanthropy whose mission is to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement, announced the grant at the public launch of the endowment initiative on Saturday, Sept. 13.

SPELMAN RECEIVES $1.4 MILLION GRANT TO MENTOR AND DEVELOP FEMALE SCIENTISTS
ATLANTA (April 24, 2008) Spelman College has received a $1.4 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to identify creative new ways to engage students in the biological sciences. Spelman will use the grant to help more Black women develop and maintain an interest in science through a documentary film project, a revamped mentoring program and new science classes.

STUDENT ART INSTALLATION EMPOWERS CHILDREN TO MAKE POSITIVE CHOICES
ATLANTA (April 20, 2008) The Spelman College Art as a Social Action class, in conjunction with The Study Hall, an afterschool program in the Peoplestown community of Atlanta, present “Power Play: Choosing Empowerment on the Playground.” This 4-by-5-foot interactive outdoor installation uses four diptych panel paintings of life-sized children to promote self-esteem and self-empowerment among second-grade scholars in the program.

Anonymous Donor Gives Spelman $17 Million for International Initiatives

To strengthen and expand international programs at Spelman College, an anonymous donor has generously given a $17 million gift to establish the Gordon-Zeto Endowed Fund for International Initiatives.

Named after Nora A. Gordon, C’1888, the first Spelmanite to teach in the Congo, and Flora E. Zeto, C’1915, among the first Congolese to study and graduate from Spelman, the gift will be used to infuse the curriculum, campus environment, and extracurricular offerings with an international component.
