    The Department of Dance Performance and Choreography Teaches Through the Lens of Black Feminist Theory

    ATLANTA (October 10, 2017) -- Spelman College’s newly formed Department of Dance Performance and Choreography has chosen a unique approach to teaching the next generation of dancers, choreographers and change makers by accentuating Black feminist theory. As a result of integrating the works of notable Black feminist writers and activists such as bell hooks and Audre Lorde throughout the curriculum, the department is cultivating freethinkers and intelligent movers interested in becoming influential creators, writers, historians, educators and scholars within the evolving field of dance.

    Spelman College Earns Several Top Spots in U.S. News and World Report 2018 Best College Rankings

    ATLANTA (September 12, 2017) –Spelman College has made a significant rise in the U.S. News and World Report Best College rankings released today. Ranked as the No. 1 historically Black college or university for the 11th year in a row, the College has moved up 11 spaces in the National Liberal Arts Colleges rankings to No. 61, tying with Agnes Scott College. Spelman is also in the top 50 High School Counselor Rankings and the top 100 Best Value Colleges.

    AAC&U Selects Spelman College as an Inaugural Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Center

    ATLANTA (August 17, 2017) – The Association of American Colleges and Universities has selected Spelman College as one of 10 institutions that will serve as inaugural sites for the first Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Centers. With generous support from Newman’s Own Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, AAC&U will guide the development of the TRHT Campus Centers as part of a multi-year initiative to educate, prepare, and inspire the next generation of leaders to advance justice and build equitable communities.

    The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art Launches its 2017 Season with a Solo Exhibition Featuring Acclaimed Artist Beverly Buchanan

    ATLANTA (August 17, 2017) -- Through incisive considerations of site, history, biography, and portraiture, Beverly Buchanan (1940–2015) produced landmark bodies of work, including cast concrete and mixed-media sculptures, drawings and books, and evocative paintings and photographs. “Beverly Buchanan—Ruins and Rituals,” on view September 14-December 2, 2017, at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, is the most comprehensive exhibition of Buchanan’s work to date, with more than 150 objects, including sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, notebooks of the artist’s writings and documentation of private performances. The exhibition emphasizes how Buchanan’s work resisted easy categorization and investigates her dialogue not only with a range of styles, materials, movements and literary genres, but also with gender, race, class and identity.

    Professor Beverly Guy-Sheftall Creates Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Levi Watkins Jr.

    ATLANTA (July 18, 2017) – Spelman College alumna and professor, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Ph.D., has established the Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Scholars Program as well as a companion lecture series at Spelman that will explore contemporary issues of race, gender and sexuality, beginning in 2018. The scholars program and lecture series were launched with a pledge of $100,000 in May 2017.
